Harris Sponsors Kitchen Items Donation Drive

CHICAGO, November 18, 2008 –Harris Bank is sponsoring a donation drive for new kitchen items to benefit the Assistance League of Chicagoland West’s “Operation New Start”. Donations will be accepted through the end of November at a number of West suburban branches, including 225 Lily Cache Lane and 710 S. Weber Road in Bolingbrook, as well as branches in Aurora, Plainfield, Oswego and Plano.

‘Operation New Start’ provides essential kitchen equipment for area families transitioning from homelessness to independent living and are looking for the following items;  cookware, dishes, silverware, small appliances, cleaning tools and supplies, children's plates, utensils and sippy cups, textiles and cookbooks with simple recipes.  

Assistance League of Chicagoland West is a local chapter of a national nonprofit organization that puts caring and commitment into action through community-based philanthropic programs. Through a commitment of hands-on action, the innovative programs of Assistance League touch the lives of more than 1.2 million children, seniors, families and others in need.

Harris Opens Chicago's First Environmentally-Friendly Bank Branch in Washington Heights

CHICAGO, November 15, 2008 -Today, in Washington Heights on the South Side, Harris opened its first “green” bank branch.

The new branch, at 1620 West 95th Street, is staffed with tellers and personal bankers, business bankers and mortgage originators. There are three drive-up lanes, including a drive-up ATM, and convenient parking. The branch also has one walk-up ATM.

Harris received support from the City of Chicago to install the latest geothermal technology in the branch.

“Green buildings are an important part of our efforts to make Chicago the greenest city in the nation and I commend Harris for opening the City’s first green bank branch,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley.

“Working together, we’re making businesses more competitive and environmentally friendly, and the support and leadership of our business community helps us achieve our goal of a greener Chicago.”

The branch was designed by STL Architects. Its geothermal heating and cooling system, depending on the season, uses a ground source heat pump to either release heat into the ground (summer) or pump heat into the bank (winter).

This reduces energy consumption by as much as 30 percent annually, compared to a conventional system.

The branch uses other green elements that provide greater energy efficiency, healthier indoor air and which preserve natural resources. It saves energy through use of motion-detecting light switches, daylight use in 75 percent of space and other low-energy electronics.

It has high albedo content surfaces – which are reflective and do not trap heat -- for paving and roofing, and uses both recycled wood and wood from sustainable forests.

The branch has bike racks and showers to encourage employee use of bikes for commuting, is close to major CTA bus lines and has parking set aside for fuel efficient vehicles.

The branch has drought-resistant plantings, which consume less water, and low consumption fixtures and faucets.

Harris has applied for a Silver Certification for the branch from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Harris Sponsors Toys for Tots

CHICAGO, Ill., November 12, 2008 -The holidays are fast approaching and at no other time does giving mean more. For the eighth consecutive year Harris is sponsoring The U.S. Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” toy drive.

The toy collections will take place starting November 17 to December 18. All Harris branches in Illinois, and Indiana will be accepting donations, with the exception of limited-service and stand-alone ATM locations.

For more than 60 years the Toys for Tots program, has sought to deliver, through a shiny new toy during the holidays, a message of hope to needy children that will motivate them to grow into responsible members of their communities. Last year, Harris collected over 30,000 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve toy drive.

“This is always one of my favorite charities. The U.S. Marine Corps with Toys for Tots have been delivering a message of hope for generations, and it’s a message I am happy to help deliver as well,” said Yasmin Bates, Executive Vice President, Community Affairs, Harris.

Toys for Tots was launched by Major Bill Hendricks, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles in 1947. At the time 5,000 toys were collected and distributed to needy children in the Los Angeles area.

Harris Opens New Branch in Chesterton

CHESTERTON, Ind., November 12, 2008 -Harris announced the opening of a new full-service branch to serve the Chesterton community.

Harris Chesterton is located at 502 E. 1100 North. The 3,976 square feet branch is well positioned to provide greater convenience and a complete array of banking services to Harris customers in the Chesterton community. The stand-alone branch features four drive-up lanes one of which is an ATM lane.

The Harris Chesterton facility incorporates green elements into its design with the use of materials called for in a LEED project. The building features high albedo content surfaces for paving and roofing, certified wood and the use of paint, carpet, adhesives and composite wood with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Harris Names Jill Haupt Regional President, Harris Community Banking
Banking Veteran to Lead Harris’ Operations in Harris’ Wisconsin Metro Region

CHICAGO, November 7, 2008 – Harris today announced that Jill Haupt has been named regional president, Harris Community Banking, with responsibility for 11 full-service and 11 limited-service Harris branches in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Haupt will be located at the Bank’s 1000 N. Water Street location.

A 20-year veteran of the financial services industry, Haupt most recently worked for Associated Bank, N.A., where, as Senior Vice President and Regional Retail Director, she was responsible for managing 70 retail branches in the Milwaukee area. As Harris’ Wisconsin Metro regional president, Haupt will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to deliver the Bank’s retail, business banking and wealth management services across the bank’s Metro region.

“Harris Regional Presidents must be strong leaders, both within the bank and within the community,” said Tom Bolger, Harris’ District Executive for Wisconsin. “With more than 20 years experience serving the financial services needs of Wisconsin-based consumers and businesses, Jill is well-positioned to lead Harris’ operations in our Metro region. She has a proven track record as a successful leader and is dedicated to providing exceptional service to customers.”

A native of Milwaukee, Haupt has lived in cities and towns across the state, including Stevens Point, where she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in both communication and psychology at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Currently, Haupt lives with her family in Mukwonago, WI, where she is a founding member and trustee of the Women and Girls Fund of Waukesha County. Haupt is also on the board of directors for the HOME Consortium, a local organization that seeks to stimulate creation of affordable housing using federal funding, and she is a director at the Elmbrook Humane Society.

With her appointment, Haupt becomes Harris’ first regional president in the Wisconsin Metro region, following the successful integration of Ozaukee Bank and Community Bank Group, a subsidiary of Merchants and Manufacturers Bankcorporation. She will report to Tom Bolger.
