I was impressed as soon as I was introduced to Harris on Northern Illinois University's campus. They showed respect and professionalism from my first interaction with them. I attended Harris’ information session and on-campus interviews, and progressed to the second round of interviews at Harris’ offices. My plan since starting college was to eventually work for a bank, because I knew it would allow me to interact with clients directly. I chose Harris because of their strong reputation, their career advancement opportunities, and the genuine interest the recruiters showed in me.

I took advantage of the opportunity to be trained through the Business Banking Development Program (BBDP), as I knew that the curriculum was highly regarded in the banking industry. The program consisted of four rotations in which I was able to utilize my credit underwriting skills I had learned in class on current Harris deals. Besides the credit rotations, a Sales rotation better helped me get practice speaking in front of clients, cold calling, and hone my sales skills. When I graduated from the program, I entered a full-time position as a Financial Analyst in the Commercial Mid-Market group.

I credit the BBDP for instilling in me a firm foundation in areas such as credit underwriting, tax analysis and accounting. Besides the analytical segment, the BBDP helped me prepare for client interaction by participating in mock business situations and meeting with members of Harris’ upper management.

I enjoy my role because I am constantly learning new things about the industry, facing the nuances that come with each type of deal I underwrite, and putting the tools I learned in class to practical use. I enjoy the Mid-Market Segment because of the level of sophistication of the business owners and the challenges each new deal presents. Our team takes a collaborative approach to each deal and it’s nice to know you have the right resources working behind you.

I highly recommend the Business Banking Development Program to anyone with strong communication and analytical skills who has a genuine interest in commercial lending. One could find comfort in knowing they would be starting their career in an industry-leading company with a strong history and reputation. The program offers a great learning opportunity, so soak up all of the information you can – go in with confidence, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and always continue to network!
